What is LAANC?

Breaking Down the Potential of LAANC

 

LAANC is available to all Kittyhawk users. 

What is LAANC?

Aviation is full of acronyms, and there’s no better example than LAANC — or Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability. LAANC was developed over the last year in a collaboration with government and private industry to open the national airspace to drone operators, replacing a ~90-day manual process to receive authorization to fly in controlled airspace, down to seconds via an API. This is a critical step in evolving the airspace and automating processes, without sacrificing safety for manned or unmanned flights.

What LAANC really means for commercial drone operators is a quick and unambiguous method to request flight authorizations in controlled airspace. The FAA has essentially replaced a blackbox method that took months to a precise method that happens immediately. For commercial pilots, the airspace will start to look a lot different.

Since our founding, we’ve been a strong advocate for the advancement and openness of our industry, highlighted by our focus on making LAANC available in the open market. That day is just around the corner, as the FAA will begin rolling out LAANC to different regions beginning April 30th in the South Central region and culminating in the Central North region in September.

Many of our customers estimate that they’ll be able to double the number of commercial flights they can do nationally once the LAANC rollout is complete. Based on the numbers below, we think those bullish views underestimate the actual potential.

LAANC will not be impactful purely through speed. Vast amounts of previously onerous airspace will become accessible across the National Airspace.

We’re excited at the opportunity that authorization wait times in seconds instead of months for authorizations will bring to the commercial drone industry once LAANC is rolled out across all major regions by the Fall of 2018. However, once we started analyzing the numbers, it became clear the largest impact isn’t speed. It’s area. And that’s even more exciting.

Question: What percent of controlled airspace has a zero foot ceiling?
Answer: 16.95%

Based on the latest UAS Facility Map (UASFM) data, a new feature we’ve recently integrated into our applications, only 16.95% of the airspace is not immediately accessible with LAANC. The other 83.05% has greater than a zero-foot ceiling. In essence, those broad 5-mile no-fly-zones are being whittled down to less than a mile per airport.

Extrapolating this across the ~500 LAANC airports around the country, this equates to more than 33,000 square miles of newly accessible airspace.

Just 16.95% of controlled airspace will not offer immediate access to fly.

Assuming that FAA Part 107 pilots comply with other LAANC-related requirements for immediate authorization, this means that vast majority of controlled airspace is opening up… But at what altitudes? Surely not more than 100 feet or so, right?

Question: What percent of UASFM is accessible up to 400 feet?Answer: 52.47%

More than half of UASFM grids have a maximum ceiling of 400 feet. This is intuitive and why many of us have been advocating for more granularity in airspace regulations, but it’s backed up by data that airport operators submitted to the FAA in creating the facility maps.

The combined impact of these two metrics mean that some of the most valuable airspace for sUAS operations is opening up meaningfully — both in area and ceiling.

In short, yes, there is very good reason to be excited for LAANC.

While we strongly recommend using Kittyhawk Flight Deck for flying your DJI crafts, we don't want to limit your operations if you are more comfortable with DJI's native app, DJI Go. DJI Sync enables easy, accurate, seamless and super-detailed flight logging directly from DJI for every craft from the Spark to the Matrice.

DJI Sync is not just about better data, it’s about simplifying your operational workflow. Once you sync new flights from DJI Go, Kittyhawk will not only detect and import those flight logs with detailed telemetry data, but will also automatically detect and assign those flights to the correct aircraft and battery(s). This means the accuracy of your imports are spot on, and for those working in teams, your chief pilots and admins will be able to see your flights without any manual steps on your part.

Once your integrations are set, just sit back and watch the imports come in. We’ll be monitoring for new flights, and at a minimum new imports will process on the hour.

FAQs:

How do I get the latest version of the app?

On the iOS app, be sure to download the latest version of the app on iTunes. 

This will have the latest automated import functionality.

Once everything is live, just be sure to check that your integration status is active (on either the web or app) and then sit back, relax, and the imports will flow.

Until then, keep on flying. We’ll bring in all of those flights shortly.

What about other drones besides DJI?

We definitely have more hardware integrations on the radar. We are working with multiple players in the market to bring the best to you. Meanwhile, if you have specific requests, let us know and let them know too. Your voice will help us move things forward more quickly.

How does automated import work?

Just have to make sure your integration is active and enabled (you can view this from the website or iOS app), and then just sync your flights on DJI Go. We’ll pull in your flights.

What about Android?

We have a number of Android projects in the works and coming soon, including DJI Sync and Flight Deck. Stay tuned :)

Do I select drone or battery(s)?

Nope. We’ll match up serial numbers (internal and external) to assign flights to the correct hardware automatically. If we don’t see the serial numbers, we’ll add a new drone or battery if needed. If you haven’t done so already, you can update serial numbers on the web or iOS app.

What if an import fails?

If an import fails, we’ll reset it and try the process again. Any flights that persistently fail will be flagged in our system. If there is a particular import that is failing and you want us to take a look at, shoot us an email to support@kittyhawk.io.

How is DJI Sync different from FlightDeck?
For best results, we still recommend performing all your flights using Kittyhawk FlightDeck, as the flights are logged natively. Flight Deck is available for the following DJI models: DJI Inspire 2, DJI Inspire 1, DJI Mavic, DJI Phantom 4 PRO, DJI Phantom 4, DJI Phantom 3 Series, and the Spark.

What is Flight Deck?

Flight Deck is Kittyhawk’s new real-time platform for drone pilots and commercial drone teams. Flight Deck brings in-flight controls of your DJI aircraft (and soon other major drone manufacturers :) into the Kittyhawk app. Kittyhawk links the drone to live airspace and coordinates with headquarters in real-time.

Settings and Connecting to your drone with FlightDeck

Step 1: Connect to the controller

From the main dashboard, you’ll see a gray “Go fly” button. Turn on your controller and DJI drone. Once connected, the icon will update and the “Go fly” button will turn green.

Step 2: Setting Up Flight Deck

Log Settings

When you connect with Flight Deck, we’ll automatically set your aircraft and battery based on the serial number.

If we haven’t seen that aircraft or battery, we’ll display a popup that will allow you to add a new asset to your account or to link the asset that’s already saved in your account.

If we’ve already linked and recognize the serial number, the aircraft and battery(s) will be automatically set and remove an extra step in your workflow.

Flight Settings

If you’ve connected to AirMap, you have two other options before you go fly.

Sending digital notice alerts participating airports and organizations of your flight plan. Especially if you’re a hobbyist, you’ll want to double check that the airport accepts digital notice. Otherwise, we display the contact phone number in our airspace screens.

Announcing the flight makes it public so that fellow pilots can see your flight and be aware of your airspace and where your drone is in real-time.

By toggling on both of these switches, you’ll help make the airspace safer and also receive real-time visibility and alerts of your airspace.

Step 3: Checklist (if you so choose)

We’ve put a convenient link to go run a checklist so that you can easily log your checklist and return right back to Flight Deck and prepare for your flight.

Step 4: Fly

Once your aircraft and battery(s) are connected and you’ve set your notice and airspace settings, it’s time to start those props!

Don't worry about it - its automatically logged for you

From the Go Fly view, we’ve brought in the core DJI UI library so most of the features and setting should look familiar. You can see the status of aircraft and receive a “ready to fly” when everything is good to go. The key addition that we’ve brought into the traditional view is an AirMap that shows your airspace layers and if you’re enabled displays live traffic (manned and in the future unmanned as well). If you’re flying on a commercial account as part of a team, we’ll also share real-time telemetry so that people back at headquarters can monitor operations as they happen. Go Fly view Flight Deck brings the core DJI Go UI into Kittyhawk, but there’s still a few things to do in DJI Go, including things like:

  • Upgrade firmware
  • Calibration settings

We’ll be adding a ton of new features to our Flight Deck platform, so let us know what ideas or requests you have for us. For now, it’s seamless to go fly, interact with the airspace, and then once you land we’ll generate a super-detailed, second-by-second log.

Flight Deck / App connection issues

Having issues connecting flight deck to your aircraft??

Occasionally you may encounter a version of the following issue:

  1. The Kittyhawk App states that it is connected to Aircraft
  2. When you tap flight deck the app prompts you to connect to the aircraft or hit refresh
  3. When you try that, neither option seems to work

If you're encountering this issue, try the following steps:

  1. Please make sure you're on the latest version
  2. Try cycling the aircraft/controller, and/or navigating to different screens on the app, and then back to the dashboard

If you keep having issues, do send us a message at support@kittyhawk.io When you send it a support request, it really helps us locate your problem faster if you provide the following details:

  1. Specific device (iPhone, iPad, etc)
  2. App version
  3. Aircraft firmware version
  4. Aircraft model

Portrait to landscape modes crash

If your Kittyhawk iOS app crashes when you rotate your screen, read this first

We've received reports from some of our customers on app crashes that happen when switching between portrait and landscape modes (horizontal vs vertical orientations)

We've managed to reproduce the issue and it only appears when the user is using the Kittyhawk MapBox map style.

As an interim fix, we recommend switching your map style to a different one.

In the meanwhile, we're working to push out an update in subsequent app versions to resolve this issue.

Calibrating your DJI's compass

Read this if you're looking to calibrate your DJI compass

Some customers have asked us if its possible to calibrate their DJI through Kittyhawk.

Unfortunately at this time we do not support that feature.

You can calibrate your DJI using the DJI app. Once you complete that, you should be able to fly using Kittyhawk FlightDeck


Kittyhawk app crashing on iOS 10

Running iOS10 ? Try upgrading to iOS 11 to prevent crashes

If you're having trouble loading the Kittyhawk app, its is likely because you're running an older version of iOS. Try upgrading to iOS 11.4 to ensure you're getting the best experience from Kittyhawk.


How to install Kittyhawk on DJI CrystalSky

Kittyhawk is now available on DJI CrystalSky for our customers on SMB and Enterprise Customers.

Back in December 2017, we announced our plans to offer Kittyhawk in DJI's CrystalSky. As promised, The Kittyhawk Flight Deck platform is now available on the DJI Crystal Sky. And because we’re a made in the USA security-focused alternative to other applications, we’ll have a secure location for you to download the APK along with a checksum so you can be assured the Kittyhawk code you have hasn’t been tampered with or altered. Email us at support@kittyhawk.io to get the .apk file for your Crystal Sky. Kittyhawk for Crystal Sky is now available for our SMB and Enterprise customers. If you're interested in trying it out now, here's our installation guide. Email us at sonal@kittyhawk.io to get the secure .apk file. Follow the following steps to install .apk file on yur device.    


Accessing Flight Deck Media

After completing a flight inside of the Kittyhawk app, all of your pics and videos taken during the operation are saved to the SD card and accessible in the app in two sections. Immediately after flight from the notes/details screen, there is a "Media" button to view pics from that flight. You can browse the pics, save to your iOS device, or upload to the Kittyhawk cloud (and later accessible from the web or anywhere on the Kittyhawk platform). You can also browse any media on the drone's SD card by going to Assets > Media. From here, you can also save to device or upload to Kittyhawk. Note, to view media on the drone, you will need to be connected to the drone with the aircraft turned on.  


DJI Import issues

One of the awesome features of the Kittyhawk platform is the ability to import your flights from DJI Go into Kittyhawk. This feature is available on all of our premium plans.

One of the questions we get is around problems successfully importing your DJI flights into Kittyhawk as well as integrating DJI with Kittyhawk.

Trouble integrating with DJI

Here's some steps you can take to troubleshoot:

  1. What is the Status of the DJI Integration?
  2. Does the app ask for credentials update?
  3. When you introduce your credentials to DJI Import integration, do you have any kind of error?
  4. Does the app show a popup?

If the DJI Import setup integration is correct, it could take some time for the flights to appear. If you're having trouble, try going through the DJI Import set-up again.

If you're having trouble connecting to DJI Go

This could be because Kittyhawk app is still open and working with the Remote Controller.

Make sure to close all the apps running in the background and restart the remote controller. 

After that, try reopening Kittyhawk or DJI Go4. 

Updating your firmware

Many times, you could be experiencing these issues due to an out-of-date firmware on your DJI.

The fastest way to fix this would be to update your DJI's firmware. You can do this via the DJI Go App. Always make sure you're using the latest version of the DJI Go App

  1. The type of drone
  2. Your device type (iPhone, Pixel, etc)
  3. Your drone's firmware version
  4. Your Kittyhawk app version

Risk Assessments

Risk assessments is a premium feature available to users who are on the Intro, PIC, SMB and Enterprise plans.

Having a record of the risk assessment for the mission, state of the pilot, state of the aircraft, airspace surroundings, and flight conditions are invaluable data points to accompany pilot checklists and flight logs, especially to analyze any unforeseen events post mission.

Similar to old-school log books or spreadsheets, previous risk assessment procedures have been informal, with unstructured qualitative data. Kittyhawk Risk Assessments formalizes this procedure by assigning risk scores and recording the conditions and circumstances surrounding a mission and flight.

Kittyhawk Risk Assessments are based on a scoring system utilizing predictive analytics of prior pilot missions and upcoming flight condition data. 

Risk Assessments comprise two elements:

Initial Risk Assessments

Initial Risk Assessment, designed to be initiated in the planning phase of a mission to help Chief Pilots gauge the risk of the mission and assess if different pilots or aircraft may be needed given the circumstances
